Professor Ioannis Tsamardinos talked to THE California.news, a news crowdsourcing platform hosting entrepreneurs worth sharing their experience and know-how. Ioannis is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence – he holds a Ph.D. from the Pittsburgh University and has served as Professor at the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University. His research includes Artificial Intelligence Machine learning and Automated Machine Learning. One of his algorithms is onboard the Deep Space I spacecraft. He is currently a faculty member at the Computer Science Department at the University of Crete, where he heads his own Lab, MensXMachina, or “mind from the machine,” successfully translating academic R&D into real-world business tools ready to market.

Their need was to design an Automated Machine learning tool to empower anyone to turn raw biological data into actionable knowledge and democratize machine learning for citizen data scientists, the way Excel democratized spreadsheets. JADBio came up from the cumulative knowledge and years of expertise of his team and successfully launched in 2020, with the purpose to provide leading-edge AI tools and automation capabilities enabling life-science professionals to build and deploy accurate and explainable predictive models with speed and ease.

Prof. Tsamardinos did not fail to mention the most difficult partσ of this experience describing the first 100 days as productive chaos and how proud he, after all, feels hoping that he and his team have managed to open a window to a new world where everyone has direct access to the knowledge of his data. “I feel very proud when I see our non-expert analyst users, like doctors, biologists, pharmacologists, psychologists, and other life scientists perform a sophisticated – and correct – ML analysis using JADBio, publish the results, and put them into practice.” Finally, he closed with a bit of advice for the businesses that are trying to adapt to this economic climate, encouraging them to Research, Learn & Adapt!
